2020-21 School Budget Vote
On Monday, May 11, 2020, the Greenwich Central School District Board of Education is expected to take action, at it’s virtual meeting, on a proposed 2020-2021 budget of $21,976,710. This plan represents a zero budget-to-budget increase from the approved 2019-2020 budget of $21,976,71.
An Executive order in New York State recently established the new statewide budget vote date as June 9,2020. A postcard with budget vote details will be sent to all residences in the district. This year, voting will be done by absentee ballot only. All qualified Greenwich voters are eligible to vote. Ballots will be automatically sent to all voters from the last four district polls. If you want to vote and are an eligible voter, but have not participated in the school vote in the past, please contact District Clerk Denise Smith at (518)692-9542 or by email at email@example.com to request a ballot.
The COVID-19 shutdown has significantly impacted this year’s budget planning process. Superintendent Mark Fish said, “We are developing the budget in phases due to the uncertainty of state aid revenue this year. Phase 1 and 2 reductions have already eliminated $762,237 in expenses from our original draft budget. The reductions have been accomplished through retirement attrition, supply cuts and other efficiencies.” According to New York State, there could be additional restrictions in state aid throughout the year. “We are planning for other phases of reductions just in case. We need to present a fiscally responsible plan for the public to consider on June 9, 2020.” The proposed plan represents a 1.91% tax levy increase which is at the tax cap limit. “This represents an annual commitment we make to the community when we build our budget.”
